afternet

I'm having trouble connecting to afternet...I had trouble yesterday (Monday) afternoon, it was okay Monday night, and now on Tuesday night I'm having trouble again. I've tried different servers and they work fine, so it can't be my end I'm assuming. The website doesn't seem to want to come up either...

Zie and zir

I've found that gender-neutral pronouns actually exist in the English language! This site gives some info. Apparently they are usually typed/read as sie and hir (he/she and him/her respectively), but some people have issues with them since they can mistakenly be heard as she and her. Therefore, some people recommend pronouncing/writing them as zie and zir. I like it. A quick search on the internet shows that the pronouns have been used on usenet and irc...I think I might try using them in #shyroom, so be advised :-P

best of

several of us in #shyroom feel that it would be fun to start a "best of" thread where you can post (hopefully short) logs of funny, classic #shyroom moments. please try to date them as i don't think the comments automatically insert dates for some weird reason. ta :-)

It just occoured to me...

My dad is getting married in a month and it just occoured to me that I am going to have a step sister. I've never even met her. I've had no worries about this wedding until this point; I like my dad's fiancee and I figure it's their thing, a celebration of their unity. But, now this step sister thing is starting to freak me out. Am I going to have to get along with her? Am I going to have to try to be her friend? What if she is really cool and I am a nobody in comparison? How am I going to have to act at the wedding? I don't really want to talk to her, :| but she is going to be standing right next to me during the ceremony. Fortunately, she does live on the East coast. Hopefully this feeling will pass with time. I'm sure she's not a bad person either, right?

jambo shy petals

I often hear people talking about how human beings are very prone to remembering the bad things and not remembering the things that went smoothly etc. This can relate to many aspects of life, not least social situations I am sure many will agree.

There is not a significant amount of point to this post, but last week there was a wasp sitting on one of the oven knobs, and as I reached down to turn on a topside hob, I almost grabbed this pesky wasp who decided to fly off at the last few milliseconds – a near sting incident.

And since that incident, I have been very careful to look out for any wasps or other nasty insects hiding on the oven knobs. Now I must have turned on a hob without any hitch whatsoever literally thousands of times on that oven, yet the only one of those thousands of times I actually remember is the one which wasn’t a pleasant experience.

This is my first hand proof for me that the first statement of this post is true – and shows that just one negative experience can undo a very large amount of positive experiences.

So applying this to social situations makes me think about the amount of work that needs to be done for me to start to feel comfortable in said situations, something I wonder if I’ll ever be able to achieve. And if this is ever achieved, it doesn’t seem unlikely at all that a mountain of good work could be undone in an instant.

top of the list

my name is on top of the name list, since it starts with a "b".

i'm back

i tried to publish something on my blog, but there were errors again, so i might just post in this one from now on and say "to hell" with my blog. urz called me earlier tonight; urz posted our conversation. i went to see modest mouse in milwaukee last night; it was pretty awesome. i'd recommend the experience to anyone. paying $3.50 for a coke is pretty lame though. i think i'll work some problems in "introduction to logic and the methodology of deductive sciences" by tarski later. they've been pretty simple thus far, but i get a little tired of working through simple problems just to do them, i like it better when i have some motivation, like when i need a certain result to prove something else i'm more motivated to prove the theorem that i need. i've been working through this simple book very slowly since i've been very lazy and i'm a bit of a perfectionist. i think i understand logic and the axiomatic method a lot better now. i felt the need to prove things more formally than tarski did earlier on in the book, and to come up with formal rules of inference where tarski just uses some informal reasoning. it was taking way too long though. if this all sounds complicated to you, it's not. it's like the very beginning of proof oriented mathematics. the value of the book to me isn't so much the book itself, but the thinking about math that i've done as a result of reading it. i think i think through things in a much more clear way now. i also hope to read some more of the dharma bums by kerouac later.

hey there

i'm seeing if this works; i had some trouble posting to my own blog the other day; maybe i'll try again with that later. i hope i'm not typing all this for nothing.
